Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – Why Early Detection Saves Lives
June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about one of Australia’s most common—and most treatable—cancers when caught early.
Bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia. However, with early detection, over 90% of cases can be successfully treated. That’s why screening and awareness are so important.
Who is at Risk?
Bowel cancer can affect anyone, regardless of gender or age. While the risk increases with age, there’s growing concern about early-onset bowel cancer, which is being diagnosed more frequently in people under 50.
Common symptoms may include:
- Rectal bleeding
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Persistent changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation)
- Unexplained weight loss

No matter your age, speak with your GP if you notice any changes or symptoms. Early action is key.
Expanded Free Screening Eligibility
From 1 July 2024, Australians aged 45 to 49 can now request a free bowel cancer screening kit through the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
- Ages 45–49: Request your kit online or by calling 1800 627 701
- Ages 50–74: You’ll continue to receive a free test kit in the mail every two years
- All eligible patients: Can also ask their GP to support and guide them through the screening process
The test is safe, simple, and can be done at home in private.
Why Screening Matters
Bowel cancer often shows no symptoms in the early stages, making routine screening essential—even if you feel healthy.
The iFOBT test detects traces of hidden blood in your stool, which could indicate early signs of cancer or polyps.
According to a 2024 study in Preventive Medicine Reports, increased screening awareness and participation significantly improves survival rates.
