Breast Cancer Awareness Month – October
🌟 By Dr Emily Aries
Safety Beach Medical and Wellness Practice
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to remind all women to prioritise their breast health through awareness, screening, and early detection.
At Safety Beach Medical and Wellness Practice, Dr. Emily Aries and the Independent Medical Practitioners are committed to supporting women in understanding their personal breast cancer risk and taking proactive steps toward prevention.
💗 Why Breast Awareness Matters
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting Australian women.
- 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed during their lifetime.
- Around 90% of cases occur in women with no family history.
- Early detection and regular screening lead to the best outcomes.
🩺 Breast Checks, Screening, and Risk Assessment
Every woman should feel confident about her breast health:
- Self-checks: Get familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. See your GP if you notice any changes such as new lumps, skin dimpling, pain, or nipple changes.
- GP breast check: Book an appointment with Dr. Emily Aries or one of our Independent Medical Practitioners for a breast examination and to discuss your screening plan.
- BreastScreen Victoria:
- Women aged 50–74 years are invited for a free screening mammogram every 2 years.
- Women aged 40–49 and over 75 can also access free screening by self-referral.
Visit www.breastscreen.org.au to find your nearest clinic.
- iPrevent risk assessment:
Our Independent Medical Practitioners can help you complete the iPrevent tool — an evidence-based online program from Cancer Council Victoria that estimates your personal risk of breast and ovarian cancer, using family history and lifestyle factors.
It’s a great way to tailor your screening, lifestyle changes, and risk-reduction strategies.
