Meningococcal B (Meningitis B) – Protect Yourself and Your Family

Author: Caroline Ward Lewis – Practice Nurse

Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious infection that can cause life-threatening meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Unfortunately, we have recently seen new cases of Meningococcal B in Victoria, highlighting the importance of protecting yourself and your loved ones.

At Safety Beach Medical and Wellness Practice, the team of Independent Medical Practitioners and nurses are here to discuss immunisation options, including the Bexsero® vaccine – the only vaccine available to protect against Meningococcal B.

Who should have the Meningococcal B vaccine?

  • All children and adolescents – particularly important in babies, toddlers, and teenagers.
  • Adults under 20 years who missed vaccination in childhood.
  • At-risk groups, including:
    • People with certain medical conditions (weakened immune systems, spleen conditions, complement deficiencies).
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children under 2 years.
    • Laboratory workers exposed to Neisseria meningitidis.

How many doses are needed?

  • Children under 2 years: usually 3 doses (depending on age when started).
  • Children over 2 years and adults: usually 2 doses.

Is it government-funded?

Yes, the Meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero®) is government funded for certain at-risk groups. For others, it can be purchased privately – but the peace of mind and protection are well worth it.

Why vaccinate?

  • Protect against a serious and potentially fatal illness.
  • Reduce the spread in the community.
  • Protect vulnerable family members and friends.
