Movember: Taking Charge of Men’s Health
November is Movember, a time to raise awareness of men’s health, focusing on mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
At Safety Beach Medical and Wellness Practice, the Independent Medical Practitioners encourage men to use this month as a reminder to check in on both their physical and mental health.
🧠 Mental Health Matters
Men are often less likely to talk about how they’re feeling — but mental health is just as important as physical health. Depression, stress, and anxiety can affect anyone, and early support makes all the difference.
If you’re struggling, reach out to one of the Independent Medical Practitioners online. We can help with:
- Stress, sleep and lifestyle support
- Mental health care plans
- Referral and support for psychologists
⚙️ Prostate & Testicular Health
- Men over 50 (or earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors) should discuss prostate checks with their GP. Early detection makes treatment more effective.
- Younger men should be aware of testicular cancer, which most often affects men under 40. Check regularly for any lumps or changes, and see a GP promptly if you notice something unusual.
💓 Routine Health & Chronic Disease Care
Chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol can go unnoticed for years.
A routine men’s health check or chronic disease management plan is a great way to:
- Assess overall health
- Set goals for wellbeing
- Plan care and follow-up for the year
Chronic disease management plans are bulk billed, and reviews can be done every 3 months.
💪 Sexual & Musculoskeletal Health
Changes in sexual function, such as erectile dysfunction, can sometimes signal cardiovascular issues, hormone imbalance, or stress. These issues are common and treatable.
As a sports doctor, I also see many men with joint and muscle pain from old injuries or overuse. Evidence-based rehab, physiotherapy, or injections (PRP or cortisone when appropriate) can help get you moving again.
